A little more info for the skeptics of Invisible Children and the Bring Kony to Justice campaign:

I have to admit I'm a little shocked by the backlash to this movement and that's not easy to do given my own personal level of scepticism. Still, Joseph Kony, the guy Invisible Children is trying to put an end to, is number one on the list of criminals with the International Criminal Court. I can tell you, that's a very difficult list to be at the top of. You have to be a monster, and everyone, even the naysayers seems to recognize Kony as a bona fide monster. He's a child killer, torturer and rapist yet the critics of this action group want to make sure everyone knows the flaws of Invisible Children as they battle world wide apathy and political red tape. The link I've attached is the action groups response to the criticism. I think they've done a good job defending themselves but I'm certain they're as flawed as the rest of us save Joseph Kony, who belongs in a special group next to Hitler, Stalin, Idi Amin... You get the point.

I'm glad people are so quick to take action (amazing what they've accomplished in 24 hrs) against Invisible Children while for twenty six years Joseph Kony has been stealing children and destroying peoples lives. Too bad the Invisible Children critics didn't focus on Uganda 20 or 30 years ago so they could have ended Kony's regime before he snatched his first child.

I teach the grade 12 Society Challenge and Change course and much of it is a call to action for the injustices that envelope us in our day to day lives. Many, if not most of my students recognize apathy as one of our greatest social challenges. In my efforts to teach the curriculum and help students face so many of the difficulties that lie ahead from global warming to resource depletion to modern day slavery and war atrocities I'm constantly aware of my own inadequacies as an often dormant Canadian too busy watching television to care about the child slave who probably helped stitch together the sofa I'm laying on. I try to be honest with my students about my own short comings as I urge them to put together action plans to fight injustice. It can be a real challenge sometimes but Invisible Children and their call to action has our school buzzing. Students want to know what they can do and I'm excited to help them. This isn't McCarthyism or some witch hunt. It's a call to eradicate one of the worst killers the world has ever seen. One, who until Invisible Children's video went viral, was virtually non-existent to anyone outside of Central Africa. This 'Stop Kony' campaign may be a greater lesson than anything my students ever experience in a classroom.
