Buy-In Policy!

Secondary schools often run "Buy In's" which are student
activities used  to fund raise either to support the community or
activities within our schools.  In Athletics, for example, we utilize a Buy
In to raise money to defray the cost of athletic clothing which is not
covered in any budget dollars we receive from the Ministry of Education.
At times, we might organize a Student vs. Staff sports event or Staff and Students vs. OPP
to help fund raise.  Buy Ins also help to foster school spirit, creating an
opportunity for celebration.  It is a challenge to organize these events while at the same time,
ensuring that our classroom programs are not disrupted.

A limited number of tickets are sold for Buy In activities.   These tickets are the only way students are excused from class.    Teaching and learning within our classrooms always
continue during these times. The difficulty  we encounter occurs when  students take advantage of School organized Buy Ins as an opportunity to skip
classes.  Some students inform their parents that "nothing is
going on at school this afternoon".  This is misleading.    As a result,  we become inundated with phone calls from parents excusing students for the
afternoon or students present signed notes from parents asking for them to be
released.

Unfortunately, this puts the opportunity of running these activities at
risk.  Instead of having 200 students out of a population of 1100+ engaged
in a spirit activity, we have 500 students absent from class. This situation
seriously influences our decision to support future school spirit activities.

Please help us to continue to offer rich activities, fund raise for the community and school athletics
by contacting us when you are uncertain as to the events we are
offering and how this affects your child.  I would be delighted to
discuss this matter with any concerned parent by phone or electronically.

It is only when working collaboratively with students and parents, we can then continue to provide the opportunity for future Buy Ins.

We appreciate your support.

Sincerely,

Ron Tansley
