Annual Education Planning and Course Selection
The development and maintenance of an Annual Education Plan throughout the school years is a Ministry mandated activity for every student. With our move to on-line course selection comes an opportunity for each student to create an on-line portfolio of career and education research and experience which is fully integrated with course selection.
Rational "If you don't know where you are going, you'll end up
someplace else." Yogi Berra
The following excerpts are from the Ontario Ministry of Education document Choices Into Action:
Developing an annual education plan will help students take responsibility for their education, make informed decisions, and plan for the future with the help of parents, teacher-advisers, and guidance counsellors. The plan will include the student’s goals for academic achievement and for learning both inside and outside school.
Learning and using the process involved in developing an education plan is as important to students as are the actual plans themselves.
The planning process helps parents and teachers become aware of the goals students set for themselves and the education programs they are considering.
If students continue to maintain their portfolios from year to year by adding pieces of their best work each year, they will be able to see their growth and progress over time and to become increasingly aware of their own interests, strengths, needs, and aspirations. Selecting pieces of work that demonstrate their best efforts, progress, and achievement, both inside and outside school, will help them make informed and realistic decisions about their personal goals, future learning activities, immediate educational goals, and long-term educational and career goals. The evidence collected in an up-to-date portfolio provides a focus for parents, the teacher-adviser, and the guidance counsellor
when discussing with students the preparation and revision of their annual education plan. As students progress to secondary school, they may also choose to assemble portfolios with particular audiences in mind, such as the faculty of a college or university program or a potential employer. Their portfolios can also be used to develop résumés.
CareerCruising
The program we are using, www.CareerCruising.com, complements a database of career and post secondary information and stats with assessment tools and an on-line portfolio. Information tracked in the portfolio can be converted into a resume with a few mouse clicks and potential employers can be automatically invited to view the resume online. Because the program is located on the world wide web, students can continue to use, access and share their portfolios even after high school graduation. Implementation
Students will be introduced to the AEP and CareerCruising through one of their regular period classes, however, the onus is on the student to complete the required elements of the AEP independently. CareerCruising tracks completion for the student and can be viewed by parents as well. Each student will be expected to complete his/her AEP in conjunction with their on-line course selection due in February. Students will meet with guidance counsellors, special education teachers or teacher advisors to review their portfolios and course selections. Please click the appropriate link at left to work on your AEP.
