Members of the Mathematics Department at CCSS are:

On this web page please find the following information:

-- Assessment policies (including late assignments and zeros)
-- Buy a calculator for your child ... they WILL require one.
-- Grade 9 EQAO policy
-- Pathways (course selction possibilities)
-- Assessments Guidelines (How much do tests count for?)
-- Learning Skills

We are here to help, with the understanding that
students must uphold their end of the workload.
Parents:

Buy your child a calculator.
It is required for their success in mathematics class.
If they lose it, please buy them another one.

Expect your child to have math homework almost every night, especially Academic, College and University level courses.

If they say they don't, I would be suspicious ...
then I would check the teacher's web page.

All content on this page may change as we develop new policies and procedures.

Credit Redemption Assignments will no longer be offered.

All course assessments are considered important opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding of the course expectations.  To foster a culture of responsibility and ensure fairness to all students, below is the Department policy governing late assignments (new) and missed assignments/assessments.

Teachers and students (and parents) need to establish a positive method of communication governing these policies so that students are able to take full advantages of the opportunities that are afforded them.

Non-completion of homework and non-submission of assignments (in our experience) leads directly to not earning the credit (failure) and drastically affects student goals.

The new CCSS Assessment & Evaluation Policy can be found on the CCSS Home Page.

Missed Assessments

Students who miss an in-class assessment (test, quiz or assignment) without a valid excuse will be considered to have forfeited the opportunity to demonstrate the expectations for that particular assessment. As such, a mark of zero should be anticipated.

Students who are aware ahead of time (that they will be missing an assessment) are encouraged to PRE-arrange an alternate time and place to complete the assessment.

Students who miss an in-class assessment with a valid excuse will arrange with their teacher an appropriate time and place to complete the assessment.

The discretion of the teacher is key to the "valid excuse" phrase, and quite frankly is difficult to work with.  Your patience and understanding is appreciated in these circumstances.

For instance, if students have had several days (or weeks) to complete an assignment, and do not submit it [for reasons such as: "I had hockey last night."  or "I was finishing my English essay." or "My parents made me go to Ottawa for the weekend to watch my sister's basketball tournament."], please understand that these reasons may not be accepted as valid ... as students have had adequate time to complete it (the stduent just might lack the organizational skills to complete it, taking into account the other activities in their life).

As teachers and parents (most of us), we understand that life requires a balance between work and leisure.  However, it has been clear to us, as educators, that the collective sense of responsibility of our students have declined in the past few years and we are working at trying to instil a higher degree of responsibility.

The difficulty with this policy is that, on occasions, certain parents (in our experience) do not come forward with the truth and sometimes "cover" for their children.  This lack of honesty and integrity contravenes everything that that we stand for, and is simply not fair to students and parents who tell the truth and are completely honest.  Consequently, parents are asked to patient if a teacher questions the "valid excuse" phrase in this policy, and to understand that your child's math teacher is trying to fair to everyone

Please be aware that the Provincially-mandated
EQAO Math tests will count as 10%
of your child's final grade.

Each teacher is expected to dedicate significant
class time for preparation.

EQAO will take place on a date to be determined.  Please check the School's calendar in early December and early May.

This is an exam.

Parents and children do not have the option
to not write this test.

Please contact your child's teacher or the Head of Department for further direction.

Here is a Pathways Chart that may help you and your child which course options are available to them.

Mark updates are provided frequently (often after a unit test).

Please contact your child's teacher and check for updated marks on his/her web page.

If you have an email address that is checked often, provide it to the teacher.

Don’t wait until Parents’ Night to follow up on any concerns that you might have.
Call or e-mail the school to contact your student’s teacher.
Extra help is available. Your child needs only to ask his/her teacher to arrange a time.

Ever wonder how the Learning Skills are determined?

Here is a rubric that your Maths teacher might be using.

Each course has different weightings for tests, quizzes, assignments and exams.

Here is what your teachers have agreed upon for each course:
