The Enriched/Advanced Placement Program Information & Guidelines The program provides an enriched classroom setting for highly motivated students in English, mathematics and science. The program begins in Grade 9 and allows students to deepen their understanding beyond the curriculum expectations with an accelerated and enriched program. These courses can lead to Advanced Placement classes in Grade 12 that prepare students to write AP exams. The exams can lead to a university credit. All strong academic students are encouraged to apply. Advanced Placement courses are currently offered in English, Physics, Biology and Chemistry in the grade 12 courses.  An exam is written in May for each grade 12 A.P. course that is scaled from 1 - 5.   The results are forwarded to students in July/August.   Those results, if a 4 or a 5 , can be submitted to the university of choice and credits can be issued   For further information  check out “www.ap.ca” or check the university website. Preadvanced  Placement courses are offered in grade 9, 10 and 11.   These are the precursors to the grade 12 A.P. courses which help students get prepared for the high standard and workload expected in each course.  The Preadvanced Placement courses all have greater depth and breadth to them than the regular Academic course.  Classes are topped off at 32 students and students need teacher recommendations to be enrolled in an AP course.   If a student, with parental support, would like to enroll in an AP course without teacher recommendation, than an interview with guidance staff will occur. This upcoming school year (2009/2010) a GLS201 and a GLS401 are offered to support students taking two or more AP courses in the second semester.  These courses will only be filled with the principal’s approval and will be helpful to support students in grades 10 - 12. The Flexibility Of The AP Program. The AP Program allows students to select the number of AP classes that suit their learning needs. While some students might choose as few as one AP class, others may select the full complement of courses offered in order to work towards the AP exams that are recognized worldwide. Admission Criteria Clarington Central welcomes interested students into the Enriched Program in Grade 9 who have strong academic achievement and are committed to active learning. Submit an interest response & a recommendation from a teacher. Student Interest Response In a clearly written statement of approximately 200-250 words, please indicate why you are applying to the AP Program. What do you hope to gain from the program?
